WASHINGTON (AP) - Tanya Vogel will become George Washington’s athletic director on July 1 after serving as acting AD since the start of the year.
When Patrick Nero resigned after nearly seven years as AD in December, the school said that Vogel, who was deputy athletic director at the time, would start a search for a permanent replacement.
GW announced Vogel’s appointment on Monday.
Nero’s departure came about 15 months after GW fired men’s basketball coach Mike Lonergan following an internal investigation into players’ allegations about Lonergan’s behavior.
Lonergan was fired in September 2016, and a settlement was reached between him and the university a year later.
Vogel played soccer as an undergraduate student at George Washington, then coached the team from 2000-11, before working at Northern Arizona. She returned to GW in 2015.
