YANKTON, S.D. (AP) - Police say a man found dead in downtown Yankton died of “positional asphyxia,” meaning his body was in a position that caused him to be asphyxiated.

Authorities identify the man as 39-year-old David Courtney. His body was found in a narrow gap in between two buildings Monday. Police say the body had been there for at least a couple months.

Yankton Police Chief Brian Paulsen says Courtney had been reported missing in January. The Press & Dakotan reports firefighters helped retrieve the man’s body because it was wedged in such a narrow space. Firefighters cut through a wall in one of the buildings to reach him.
