PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island has issued a call for proposals for a company to run sports betting at the Twin River casinos, should the U.S. Supreme Court rule to allow it.
The Providence Journal reports the Rhode Island Lottery is seeking to award the contract in time to start taking wagers in October.
Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo has included potential revenue from legalized sports gambling in her nearly $9.4 billion state budget plan. The administration is counting on at least $23.5 million in revenue if sports betting starts Oct. 1.
Mark Furcolo, director of the state Department of Revenue, says Rhode Island needs to offer sports gambling to remain competitive with casinos in nearby states.
Raimondo has said she is confident the Supreme Court will rule in favor of sports betting.
