Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens wants to repeal the Second Amendment. He does add, though, that this probably has no chance of happening. What does have a chance, I think, is an amendment requiring states to draw up their congressional districts symmetrically and as nearly equal in population as possible.

Your editorial about gerrymandering (“Taking politics out of politics,” Web, March 28) suggests states should be content with the status quo. By no means. A constitutional amendment requiring a uniform, equitable method of drawing up congressional districts would end gerrymandering once and for all.

Justice Stevens may not have thought of this. If he had, he might agree that its ratification would prove easier than repeal of the Second Amendment.
