The NHL announced Monday morning that Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson will not have a Department of Player Safety hearing about a hit he delivered to Pittsburgh Penguins forward Brian Dumoulin in the teams’ Game 2 Sunday.

Dumoulin appeared to be injured when Alex Ovechkin and Wilson sandwiched him on this play. He left the game and did not return.

When Dumoulin saw Ovechkin skating at him and ducked a bit, Wilson’s shoulder hit Dumoulin’s head, leading some to speculate that the NHL would suspend or otherwise punish Wilson for the play.

Wilson said after the game that the play was unintentional.

“I’ve watched it briefly and I don’t realize what I can really do any different. I’m just trying to — at the last second, I see Ovi coming in and you can see me bracing too as well,” Wilson said. “I end up getting taken out as well.”

Wilson, who led the Capitals in penalty minutes during the regular season, had a meeting with the Department of Player Safety in the first round for a hit that injured Columbus Blue Jackets forward Alexander Wennberg, but Wilson was not suspended.

Game 3 is Tuesday night at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, with the series tied at one game apiece after Washington took Game 2 4-1.
