Sununu vetoes bill that would change parole rules

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu has vetoed a bill that would ease penalties for parole violators.

Under state law, parolees automatically are subject to a 90-day recommital period for violations. The state parole board can only reduce that amount under select conditions.

The bill would have allowed the 90 days to be shortened if a parolee enters into board-approved substance abuse treatment programs. It had legislative support, but parole officers said it would lead to excessive leniency.

Sununu, a Republican, on Monday praised the good intentions of the bill but said it would have “concerning consequences.”

It’s Sununu’s second veto. Last year, lawmakers failed to override his veto of a bill that would have imposed new requirements on local zoning boards.
