SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A jury has convicted a former reserve deputy of manslaughter in the shooting death of his wife in Spokane Valley.

The Spokesman-Review reports a jury on Tuesday found Dwayne Thurman guilty of second-degree manslaughter after finding him innocent of first-degree manslaughter in the January 2016 death of 42-year-old Brenda Thurman.

She was shot in the heart on Jan. 18, 2016.

Court documents say the 44-year-old former Lincoln County reserve deputy told investigators that he was cleaning her handgun at their home when it went off accidentally.

His attorney Carl Oreskovich has described the death as a tragic accident.

Brenda Thurman’s family earlier filed and has settled a wrongful death civil suit against Thurman.

A civil suit that seeks to prevent Dwayne Thurman from profiting from his wife’s death is pending, according to the family’s lawyer.
