RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - Riverside County’s animal services director is urging motorists to refrain from trying to rescue animals that get onto freeways and to instead call the California Highway Patrol.

The Press-Enterprise reports this follows an incident Sunday on State Route 91 in Corona in which drivers stopped to help a stray dog. The newspaper says there was at least one crash involving two vehicles.

County Animal Services Director Robert Miller says it’s too dangerous for people to run around on a freeway to catch an animal, and it’s best left to an animal-control agency with assistance from the CHP.

The Press-Enterprise says it’s not known what became of the dog in Sunday’s incident.
