President Trump weighed in Sunday night on the controversy over the attacks on press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, calling for the White House Correspondents Dinner to be scrapped.

In her Saturday night routine, Michelle Wolf made jokes about Mrs. Sanders’ appearance and called her an Uncle Tom for white women, prompting a day of criticism from conservatives over media double standards.

Mr. Trump said Sunday night that the performance was “an embarrassment.”

“The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was a failure last year, but this year was an embarrassment to everyone associated with it. The filthy ’comedian’ totally bombed (couldn’t even deliver her lines-much like the Seth Meyers weak performance),” he wrote on Twitter before advocating for ending the annual event, which he never attended as president.

“Put Dinner to rest, or start over!” he concluded.

Despite the day of pressure, Margaret Talev, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, did not apologize for Ms. Wolf’s routing, although she did back off some, saying in a Sunday evening statement that her routine “was not in the spirit” of the event’s mission “to offer a unifying message.”
