The Washington Redskins returned to addressing defensive needs Saturday afternoon when they selected Penn State safety Troy Apke No. 109 overall in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.
Apke recorded 55 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble in 23 games for the Nittany Lions. The 6-foot-1 prospect ran a 4.34 40-yard dash at the scouting combine and was named the most valuable player at the NFPLA Collegiate Bowl, a postseason all-star game for college stars.
Apke is the son of former college linebacker and NFL replacement player Steve Apke, who played for the Steelers during the strike-shortened 1987 season.
Washington chose to add a safety to the mix exactly a month after trading Su’a Cravens to Denver. D.J. Swearinger and Deshazor Everett are the projected starters at the position.
Barring any trades, the Redskins have four draft picks remaining Saturday: one each in the fifth and sixth rounds and two in the seventh.
