PHOENIX (AP) - The Latest on a massive cardboard recycling plant fire in Phoenix (all times local):

5 p.m.

Phoenix fire officials say a massive fire that swept through a cardboard recycling plant is mostly under control.

The Phoenix Fire Department said Friday afternoon that crews spent more than three hours extinguishing the fire and trying to keep it from spreading.

Firefighters are now focused on stomping out any fires smoldering within piles of cardboard.

Several crews have already been released back to their stations.

Officials say the resulting smoke does not pose any significant risk to homes and businesses in the area.

The blaze broke out sometime before 1:30 p.m. in an industrial area just west of downtown.

A large, black plume of smoke ensued that was visible for miles.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A huge, dark plume of smoke was visible Friday afternoon just west of the downtown Phoenix as firefighters work to put out a massive fire at a cardboard recycling plant.

Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Jake Van Hook says crews are surrounding the fire and are setting up ladder platforms to elevate water hoses.

He says firefighters are also trying to keep the blaze from spreading to other nearby structures.

According to the department’s online dispatch page, multiple vehicles, including at least a dozen fire engines, are on scene.

The plant is located in a mostly industrial area near train tracks and an old cemetery.
