Thousands of people are marching in annual Los Angeles demonstrations commemorating the deaths of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians under the Ottoman Empire.

Demonstrators are waving Armenian and American flags on Tuesday and carrying signs that read “1915 never again” and “Turkish denial must end.” They aree headed toward the Turkish Consulate.

The marchers are demanding that the 1.5 million deaths starting in 1915 be recognized as genocide.

Marie Keshishian, an 18-year-old who lost all four of her great-great grandparents in the genocide, says she’s marching to honor her ancestors.

Reality TV star Kim Kardahsian West, an Armenian-American, tweeted that it’s “inspiring to see all Armenians united in peaceful protests making a difference.”

Turkey denies the killings were genocide and contends those who died were victims of civil war and unrest.
