GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Officials in a North Carolina city have asked for patience as debris from a tornado is still being cleaned up.

The News & Record of Greensboro reports the April 15 tornado touched down in Greensboro and left a path of destruction across eastern parts of the city.

Acting City Manager David Parrish told news outlets Sunday it will take weeks, months and even years for some who were affected to resume their lives.

Parrish says housing needs will be the “greatest challenge,” but didn’t have answers to whether the area is eligible for federal aid.

The city is assessing their losses after more than 1,000 structures were damaged or demolished. Guilford County Schools Superintendent Sharon Contreras says three heavily-damaged elementary schools will remain closed through the end of the year.
