Rep. Maxine Waters said there is a fluid quality to former FBI Director James Comey’s credibility that ebbs and flows with his criticism of President Trump.
The California Democrat sat down Monday with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes to discuss the political landscape when he asked her to defend a January 2017 clip in which she claimed Mr. Comey had “no credibility.”
The congresswoman laughed at the host’s request and then countered, “then was then and now is now.”
“You and Donald Trump do agree on that,” Mr. Hayes said. “That sentence you said — the FBI director has no credibility — you and Donald Trump are in agreement on that.”
“Yes, coming out of that classified briefing, I said that and I certainly meant it,” the 57-year-old lawmaker said, Mediaite reported. “However, I think it is quite different when you take a look at Comey and his relationship to the president. What he’s said, what he’s done — I believe him. I believe him, yes. So then was then and now is now.”
Mr. Comey is on a promotional book tour for “A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies and Leadership,” which details the agency’s investigations into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s infamous email server scandal, along with Russian meddling into the 2016 presidential election.

The former FBI director was fired by the president in May.
“I have received the attached letters from the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General of the United States recommending your dismissal as the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, I have accepted their recommendation and you are hereby terminated and removed from office, effective immediately,” Mr. Trump wrote to Mr. Comey in May 9 termination letter.
