WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - The process to demolish a historic Worcester church is starting this week.
The new owner of the former Notre Dame des Canadiens church has hired a contractor that will begin Monday. A spokeswoman for church property owner CitySquare II tells The Telegram & Gazette the first phase is expected to take about six to eight weeks and includes the installation of fencing to secure the perimeter of the property and environmental abatement of the building’s interior.
Once that is complete, workers will begin dismantling the structure. The site will eventually be redeveloped.
Meanwhile, the Save Notre Dame Alliance continues to raise money in an effort to preserve the church.
Notre Dame was built in 1929, but been vacant since 2007 when it was closed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester.
