The No. 14 Navy men’s lacrosse team upset No. 9 Syracuse 13-12 on a last-second goal at the Carrier Dome Saturday afternoon.
The Navy-Syracuse game pitted Joe Varello, a Navy senior, against freshman brother Dan Varello, two faceoff specialists competing against one another for the first time.
In the final 10 seconds of the game, with the score tied, Joe beat Dan for a faceoff, beat his close defense, passed the ball to teammate Jeff Durden and received it back from him in time to fire off a buzzer-beating goal.

There were four lead changes and six ties in the game, the regular season finale for both teams. Navy improved to 9-4 overall, while Syracuse finished 7-5. Both squads are in the running for at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament, and this quality win certainly could help Navy’s chances.
