Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon fouled a ball off his foot in a game at Nationals Park on April 13.
The team hoped he would return to action in a few days so Rendon did not go on the disabled list. But he has not started or played in a game since April 13. Rendon finally went on the DL with a toe contusion prior to the Sunday night game in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
To take his spot on the 25-man roster, the Nationals called up right-hander Austin L. Adams from Triple-A Syracuse. He had two saves in as many chances for Syracuse and got the call for his first big league assignment this season.
Rendon is hitting .286 with one homer and four RBIs in 14 games.
The Nationals (10-11 before Sunday) begin a three-game series Monday night in San Francisco against the Giants. The three-city road trip ends Wednesday against the Giants.
