SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A trade organization’s report shows Utah’s outdoor recreation economy generates more than $12 billion in consumer spending each year and supports 110,000 jobs.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the Outdoor Industry Association on Tuesday released a report that examined outdoor recreation spending in each congressional district in the country, finding that Utah residents alone spend more than $ 7 billion.

The data also indicated that nearly three-fourths of Utah residents engage in outdoor recreation. Nearly one-fourth of the recreation trips occur within a 30-minute drive of their homes.

The organization cited the numbers to call for increased funding for trails and public parks as well as community planning that allows for better access to outdoor recreation.
