MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s top teacher’s union is calling for the creation of a new group that would decide health benefits for all public school employees.
The Vermont chapter of the National Education Association fought last year to protect how health care costs were negotiated at a local level. The Burlington Free Press reports the union says now a new commission will design a single health plan for the whole state.
The union wants to hold 50 percent of the seats on the proposed commission, with the remaining seats appointed by the governor to represent school boards.
Republican Gov. Phil Scott previously said he still wants to see a statewide health plan or other cost-saving measures passed this year.
