Leave it to Bryce Harper to do something that many long-time baseball observers had never seen.
Harper shattered his bat and was left with just a few inches of the stump but still managed to hit a solo homer over the fence in right field on Monday night in New York.
The two-out homer came against Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom and gave the Nationals a 1-0 lead in the first game of the three-game set.
It was the second day in a row that Harper hit a homer in the first inning. The homer against the Mets gave him eight longballs this year, which led the National League.
The homer went 405 feet and was traveling at 99 miles-per-hour as the barrel of the bat flew behind home plate and near the first-base dugout.
Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) announcers Bob Carpenter and F.P. Santangelo were amazed that Harper was able to hit a homer with just a few inches of the bat left in his hands.
The Nationals entered the contest six games back of the first-place Mets in the National League East.
