SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Nation’s Report Card shows Utah students generally performed above average last year, but state education officials warn there are achievement gaps among some demographic groups.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the results of the National Assessment of Education Progress were made public Tuesday, showing proficiency scores in math and reading are above the national average for the state’s fourth- and eighth-graders.

The national snapshot of student learning conducted every two years also showed that Utah students who qualified for free or reduced lunches scored at least 20 points lower in both subjects compared to students who don’t qualify for meal assistance.

State Superintendent Sydnee Dickson says officials are working with schools to “ensure every student has the knowledge and skills needed to ensure they have choices about their future.”
