EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island elementary school has been closed for the day after a chunk of the gym’s ceiling collapsed while about two dozen students were in the room.

East Greenwich Superintendent Victor Mercurio tells The Providence Journal no one was injured Tuesday when a corner of the plaster ceiling fell onto the gym floor at James Eldredge Elementary School around 11 a.m.

He is waiting for the results of a structural engineering report on the ceilings throughout the nearly century-old building before deciding whether to re-open Thursday. Tests for asbestos were negative.

He described the collapse as “quite upsetting for students and teachers.”

The school has about 300 students in grades three through five.
