The outgoing president of Planned Parenthood will deliver a lecture at Dominican University of California this week despite church teaching that considers abortion a grave evil.
In Thursday’s lecture, Cecile Richards will talk about her just-released memoir, “Make Trouble: Standing Up, Speaking Out, and Finding the Courage to Lead — My Life Story.”
The school describes her as a “national leader for women’s rights and social and economic justice.” Tickets are $40 and come with an autographed copy of her book.
The event is part of the Institute for Leadership Studies 2018 Spring Leadership Lecture Series at the San Rafael, California, university.
Past and future speakers include journalist Maria Shriver and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
Ms. Richards delivered a lecture in June at Georgetown University, the country’s oldest Catholic institution.
She announced she would step down from Planned Parenthood earlier this year. Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider, performing more than 320,000 every year.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes abortion as “gravely contrary to the moral law.”
“Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes,” it reads.
