ATLANTA (AP) - An Atlanta charter school’s investigation into a student blackface performance is set to end Tuesday.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that second-graders at The Kindezi School at Old Fourth Ward recited a poem last year while wearing blackface masks. The school’s executive director and founder, Dean Leeper, apologized at a Monday school board meeting for any pain caused by the performance.
Atlanta Public School Superintendent Meria Joel Carstarphen said at the meeting that any similar conduct at the school will be met with sanctions. She also said she’s looking forward to the investigation’s outcome and the “appropriate consequences” for the adults involved in the performance. The school already has promised to provide cultural competency training to teachers.
