CUMBERLAND, R.I. (AP) - The Cumberland Town Council has decided not to act on a resolution opposing state subsidies to build a new stadium for the Pawtucket Red Sox.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2vJwgfq ) council members voted to table the resolution indefinitely Wednesday.

The proposal was introduced by Cumberland resident Pat Ford, chairman of the Libertarian Party of Rhode Island. He says the team should pay for its own stadium.

Pawtucket Red Sox vice chairman Mike Tamburro attended. He said he wanted to make sure “we don’t lose this for the state.”

Legislation was introduced in the state Senate to provide a $23 million state investment to help finance the estimated $83 million stadium in Pawtucket.

The team has said it would pay $45 million and $15 million would be sought from the city.
