SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The number of fatalities on Utah freeways and highways is above what it was at the same time last year.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2xPaMPS ) two fatalities that occurred during the Labor Day weekend increased the total deaths to 84, two more than where the number stood last year.

Of the deaths so far this year, 73 are from wrecks involving cars or trucks, nine are from motorcycles and two from traffic-related pedestrian deaths. In 37 of the fatal crashes, seat belts were not worn.

Utah Highway Patrol says troopers have made 178,350 vehicle stops this year with 54 percent of the stops due to speeding and 14 percent for failure to use seat belts. Of the stops, 1.2 percent resulted in drivers arrested for alcohol or drug impairment.
