DENVER (AP) - A man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for stabbing a friend to death in the small town of Strasburg east of Denver.

The Denver Post reported Wednesday https://goo.gl/L9ePbc that 21-year-old Jeremiah Pepper was sentenced for the Aug. 10, 2016, death of 23-year-old Andrew Martinez.

Prosecutors say the two men started arguing after Pepper walked out to his car and discovered that Martinez had slept there overnight. The two had worked together at a local fast-food restaurant.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Cori Alcock asked the court for the maximum sentence allowed, saying the simple argument should not have led to Martinez’s death. Pepper pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

Strasburg is about 35 miles east of downtown Denver.
