HOUSTON (AP) - A 39-year-old Houston man convicted for a third time on federal charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm has been sentenced to more than eight years in prison.

Prosecutors say Ronnie Thomas, who pleaded guilty in May, also has 12 state criminal convictions.

Acting U.S. Attorney Abe Martinez says U.S. District Judge Vanessa Gilmore on Wednesday ordered Thomas to prison for 100 months and then three years’ probation once he’s released.

This latest conviction stems from a police chase in Houston last year when he refused a traffic stop and sped off, eventually crashing into a tree and then trying to flee on foot. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying a backpack containing nine types of drugs, including heroin, codeine, cocaine and marijuana.
