SUFFOLK, Va. (AP) - The helicopter pilot for a local TV station in Virginia has died following a motorcycle crash.

The Virginian-Pilot reports 67-year-old Steven Lewis Decker died Sunday night after he was thrown from a motorcycle that collided with a car near Suffolk Executive Airport. Suffolk police say he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Decker operated Decker Aviation, a maintenance operation for helicopters and airplanes, out of Suffolk Executive Airport. He had worked at Hampton Roads television station WAVY since 2000, performing maintenance and later flying the station’s Chopper 10 and drone.

WAVY news director Mark Kurtz called Decker “the premier guy” for helicopter work in Hampton Roads. Kurtz says viewers never saw or heard Decker, but the pilot was the one responsible for visual coverage of several major stories.
