PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Police say a burglary suspect was arrested after jumping into a Rhode Island river to escape officers who were chasing him.
The Providence Journal reports that the suspect, Jason Toste, of Tiverton, was charged early Sunday with burglary.
Police say a woman told police she was in the apartment and saw the suspect in the kitchen “sifting through photos.” She says the suspect fled.
Police allege Toste started running as an officer approached him, and jumped into the Providence River. Cmdr. Thomas Verdi says the Providence Fire Department arrived at the scene with a ladder to remove Toste from the river.
Verdi says Toste was taken to the Adult Correctional Institutions.
It couldn’t be determined Sunday if Toste has an attorney.
