PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Portland’s newest professional hockey franchise won’t be the Puffins, Watchmen, Lumberjacks or Wild Blueberries.
The ECHL franchise announced Friday that the winning name from a contest was the Maine Mariners. That’s the same name the Portland team had from 1977 to 1992 in the American Hockey League.
Finishing second was Wild Blueberries.
The name wasn’t a huge surprise. The Portland Press Herald already reported that the team trademarked Maine Mariners for clothing and merchandise.
There has not been pro hockey in Portland since the Pirates departed last year. The new team is set to play its first game in the Cross Insurance Arena in October 2018.
