LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming looks to have a running game and no one is more excited than quarterback Josh Allen, who is being looked at as a possible high NFL draft pick next year.
The Cowboys rushed for 177 yards in last week’s win over Hawaii. In the previous three games, they were averaging just 80.3 rushing yards and no running back had gained more than 43 yards in a game.
Against Hawaii, Wyoming had its first 100-yard rusher this season when Trey Woods, who just converted from linebacker at the start of the season, gained 135 yards.
A stronger running game in Wyoming’s pro-style offense should only help Allen’s production. In Wyoming’s 28-21 win over Hawaii, Allen hit James Price on a 25-yard pass in the end zone on the first play of overtime for the victory.
Allen finished the game completing just nine of 19 passes for 92 yards. But receivers dropped several of his passes, which has been a recurring problem for Wyoming this season.
Allen said he has confidence in his receivers and the drop issues will be worked on during practice.
A look at Allen’s play in the last game:
HIGHLIGHTS: Allen’s TD pass in overtime is the type of play that can raise eyebrows among NFL scouts. On the play, Allen rolled right and, while on the run, placed a pass over the top of a defender where only his receiver had a chance to catch it.
AIR YARDS: The 92 passing yards indicate a lack of downfield passing. Allen’s longest completion against Hawaii was 25 yards. Allen is averaging 164.5 passing yards a game but 328 came in one game against FCS Gardner-Webb.
