AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Gov. Paul LePage is calling lawmakers into special session next month.
He ordered lawmakers to return on Oct. 23 to fix problems in the food sovereignty law and to restore funding for the Maine Office of Geographic Information System.
But lawmakers also will deal with sales of recreational marijuana. A Maine legislative panel agreed Thursday on a rewrite of the law that includes doubling taxes on recreational marijuana sales.
LePage said meat and poultry must be exempted from the food sovereignty law so state officials can continue to regulate those products. If not, he said the federal government will step in to regulate them.
He also said funding must be restored for the Maine Office of Geographic Information System. Funding was inadvertently removed in the legislative process.
