NAMPA, Idaho (AP) - Crews from the Nampa Train Depot and Museum are close to finishing restoration work on a 1942 Union Pacific caboose.

The Idaho Statesman reports (https://bit.ly/2fxG2hW ) crews have been working to restore the caboose for the past three years. The upgrades include windows and furnishings, a new wood interior, and a fresh coat of freight-car red paint that matches CA-3 class cabooses’ traditionally coloring.

The Union Pacific donated the caboose to the Nampa museum in the 1980s. It is one of the 99 CA-3 cabooses built by the Union Pacific.

The restoration work is being paid through a $13,800 grant from the Canyon County Preservation and a $3,000 reimbursement grant from the Idaho Heritage Trust.

Museum officials say the caboose will be reopen to the public next June.
