DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa judge has granted unemployment benefits to a woman despite opposition from the U.S. Postal Service, which had fired her.
The Des Moines Register reports that Cheryl Love was dismissed as Des Moines postmaster in February. The Postal Service had opposed benefits for Love, accusing her of misconduct and neglecting her duties.
State records say Love’s bosses reported that she failed to investigate their warnings about the suspicious nature of money orders issued at another Des Moines office. The postal clerk involved eventually was indicted and has pleaded guilty to theft.
The administrative law judge awarded Love unemployment benefits, noting that the Postal Service disciplined Love several months after it first learned of her actions. A fired worker typically is entitled to Iowa unemployment benefits, even in cases of misconduct, if the termination follows the discovery of the employee’s actions by more than two weeks.
