ATLANTA (AP) - The former chief procurement officer for the city of Atlanta has pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge stemming from a federal bribery investigation.
Prosecutors said in a court filing Monday that, from at least 2015 through January of this year, Adam Smith accepted more than $30,000 in bribes from an unnamed vendor who received millions of dollars in city contracts.
Federal prosecutors said in a news release Tuesday that Smith pleaded guilty to a single conspiracy charge.
The court filing says Smith met with the vendor regularly and accepted the payments in exchange for using his position to help the vendor get city contracts and providing future favors.
Mayor Kasim Reed fired Smith in February but provided no public explanation at the time.
