ATLANTA (AP) - A Georgia district attorney wants a county sheriff to be held in contempt of court for not restoring access to a jail phone-monitoring system.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said in Monday’s filing that Fulton County Sheriff Ted Jackson had ignored a court order to restore prosecutors’ access to the Securus Technology Portfolio system. Howard said prosecutors used the system to learn that 74-year-old Claud “Tex” McIver might be trying to influence his murder trial, and lack of access raises security concerns.
Chief Jailer Mark Adger says Howard is trying to interfere with how the jail is operated, and that the sheriff’s office didn’t know Howard had gone to the judge to restore access in August. He says prosecutors can file written requests for records.
