BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) - Officials with the U.S. Navy say test results show little to no chemical contamination in wells near a former Navy air station in Maine.
The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2xX0rEX ) officials announced the test results for the presence of perfluorinated compounds near the former Brunswick Naval Air Station Thursday.
PFCs are listed as an “emerging contaminant” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. They were commonly used in firefighting foam at airports.
Recent testing of private wells outside the base came up positive for one type of PFC, but the levels were below the EPA’s health advisory threshold.
Homes and businesses inside the base are linked to municipal water and not considered to be at risk.
Navy officials plan to continue testing.
