CLARION, Pa. (AP) - The acting president of state-owned Clarion University says the school no longer plans to notify faculty of layoffs at the end of this academic year.
Clarion was one of five of Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned universities that announced in March that layoffs and program cuts could occur in the 2018-19 school year, as the State System of Higher Education struggles generally with an enrollment drop.
But the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (https://bit.ly/2xtFaBj ) says Clarion president Todd Pfannestiel issued a statement that the school about 70 miles (112.7 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh will instead work to contain costs and avoid layoffs.
California, Edinboro and Mansfield universities also earlier this year rescinded letters warning of impending faculty layoffs.
Historically black Cheyney University has yet to do so.
