ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The Cuomo administration is inviting teachers across New York to enter a competition to develop classroom projects and activities to commemorate the 100th anniversary of women securing the right to vote in the state.

New York voters approved a woman’s right to vote in November 1917, three years before the 19th amendment granted the same right to women nationally.

To mark the state’s upcoming centennial, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul (HOH’-kuhl) have launched the New York Women’s Vote Centennial Project, in conjunction with the American Federation of Teachers and First Book, a nonprofit group that provides new books and other learning materials to children in need.

Fifteen winners will be chosen from the project entries from across the state, with each winner receiving $500 in books and resources to start their project.
