HOUSTON (AP) - Houston landfills will expand their regular daytime schedules and be open 24 hours a day to better assist with Hurricane Harvey debris removal.

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner on Friday announced the updated schedule to help clear flood-related trash.

Harvey made landfall Aug. 25 in South Texas. Heavy rain associated with Harvey swamped parts of Houston and forced thousands of residents from their homes.

Turner says Gov. Greg Abbott arranged for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to allow around-the-clock operations by Houston landfills.

Turner says the change will allow collection trucks to deposit debris at temporary sites during the day and then transfer it to landfills at night. The change is meant to have trucks spend more daytime hours collecting debris in neighborhoods.
