DALLAS, Pa. (AP) - Teachers in a northeastern Pennsylvania school board have gone on strike for a second time in two years.
Dallas School District teachers struck last year from Nov. 14 to Dec. 19, then were docked a week’s pay by the school board who said the length of the strike kept the district from offering a state-mandated 180 days of classes as a result.
Friday’s strike was announced after contract talks broke down Thursday.
Dallas teachers haven’t had a contract since September 2015 and had threatened to strike again Sept. 5 if that didn’t change. They delayed that decision in hopes of reaching a last-minute deal.
District solicitor Vito DeLuca says the district can’t raise taxes high enough to cover the increases the teachers’ union wants in salaries, health care costs and pension contributions.
