BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) - A Maine laboratory famous for breeding medical research mice claims it has a rat in its midst.

The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2wHBoR4 ) Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor filed a federal lawsuit Sept. 18 alleging researchers at a Chinese University are breeding and selling strains of its mice.

The complaint centers on descendants of two strains of mice sold to Nanjing University from 2002 to 2014.

The lab says in the lawsuit purchasers of its mice cannot breed, re-sell or distribute any offspring. It claims to have tried to resolve the dispute repeatedly, including sending a cease-and-desist letter in March 2016.

A university official says it stopped selling the mice the following month; the laboratory disagrees.

An attorney for the lab declined to comment.
