PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Protesters say they were highlighting poor housing conditions and pushing for more help for low-income renters in Rhode Island with a display at Providence City Hall that featured house-shaped pinatas stuffed with plastic bugs and rodents.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2ydVp2T ) that the protesters criticized the city Wednesday for what they called poor code enforcement. They also said a state affordable housing bond approved last year would give too much money to developers and set some income qualifications too high.
An organizer of the protest, Malchus Mills, said they previously met with Rhode Island Housing officials to discuss their concerns and were “laughed at.”
A spokeswoman for Rhode Island Housing declined to comment.
