PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo has signed legislation that helps children who witness domestic violence.

WLNE-TV reports (https://bit.ly/2hlrxdN ) that the Democratic governor signed the bill on Wednesday. Under the new law, the state will provide up to $1,500 for counseling for children affected by domestic violence.

The law aims to help children recover from abuse while helping families financially. Detectives with the Central Falls Police Department proposed the legislation.

Raimondo says the law gives children who are dealing with domestic violence at home, “a little bit of a chance, a little bit of hope, a little bit of a support network to get mental health services they deserve.”

Funding for the expansion will come from the Department of Justice.
