BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Burlington police are closing a homeless encampment in a wooded area of the city.
The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/2xwLdp3 ) police have formally notified campers at the Sears Lane site to leave the city property. City officials will remove everything left on the property on Oct. 10.
Deputy Police Chief Shawn Burke says the department closes homeless encampments when they threaten public safety or public health.
Police community affairs liaison Lacey Ann-Smith says the city closed the camp because of a confrontation involving a gun in August and a domestic violence arrest that followed. Ann-Smith says the campers had been notified as soon as the city began reviewing the site.
Burlington shuts down about one or two campsites a year.
