Actress Linda Hamilton is ready to once again save the world as Sarah Connor.
Science fiction fans have wondered whether producer James Cameron and star Arnold Schwarzenegger could convince the iconic female lead in the franchise’s first two films — 1984’s “The Terminator” and 1991’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” — to join them for the franchise’s sixth film.
The answer: She’s back.
With Ms. Hamilton on board, the three key members of the creative team that helped “T2” gross $520 million more than 25 years ago will be giving it at least one more try.
“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return,” Mr. Cameron said recently at a private event honoring the films, THR exclusively reported late Tuesday.
The plan is for Mr. Cameron and co-producer Skydance to release a new trilogy, with the first installment being directed by Tim Miller of “Deadpool.”
“There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women,” Mr. Cameron said, THR reported. “We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story. We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
The plan is to release the film in 2019, in part because the first film’s copyrights will revert to Mr. Cameron by then. Mr. Cameron reportedly plans to ignore the films after the first two, which he directed himself.
