Beau Willimon, the creator of the Netflix’s “House of Cards” and a prolific Twitter critic of President Trump, has been unanimously elected to head a powerful screenwriters guild.
Mr. Willimon, who ran unopposed, won the presidency of the Writers Guild of America East in its Sept. 19 election, The Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday evening.
The four-time Emmy nominee left the Netflix original series in early 2016 before the political drama began its fifth season. In February 2017, Mr. Willimon brewed up a tempest on Twitter with a “Declaration of Resistance” against the nation’s 45th president, comparing Donald Trump to George III, the British monarch from which the United States declared independence in 1776.
Mr. Willimon has since kept up a near daily drumbeat of anti-Trump and anti-GOP criticism on his Twitter feed, apparently to the exclusion of promoting any of his actual non-political work.
For example, his current project, “Mary Queen of Scots,” is slated for release in 2018, according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb). Mr. Willimon wrote the screenplay for the historical drama, starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, and which is in production right now, according to IMDb. A search of the screenwriters Twitter feed found no mentions of the project.
