BOSTON (AP) - Twenty-six Boston schools with poor standardized test scores are at risk of being declared “underperforming” by the state.
The Boston Globe (https://bit.ly/2f5cZOS ) reports that the schools were identified in a school district analysis that was presented to the School Committee last week. About 12,000 students attend the schools.
Principals and teachers can be removed from underperforming schools. In some cases, the schools are shut down.
Superintendent Tommy Chang says immediate action is needed because some of the district’s most marginalized students attend the schools. Chang says an additional $16 million has been designated for the city’s struggling schools in this year’s budget.
Boston Teachers Union President Jessica Tang applauds the school system’s response to struggles throughout the district but says standardized test scores are over-emphasized by the state.
