PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a Virginia firefighter has been arrested following a four-hour standoff with police.

The Virginian-Pilot reports 33-year-old Zachariah Ramsey Burd was arrested Tuesday and faces charges of attempted capital murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and misdemeanor reckless handling of a firearm. Burd has been a Portsmouth firefighter for six years.

According to court documents, Burd made suicidal posts and responding medics heard a gunshot from inside his house. Officers then set up a perimeter around the house and attempted to get Burd to speak with a negotiator. He refused to come out and became extremely irate.

Portsmouth police Detective Misty Holley says Burd eventually emerged and fired several shots in the direction of surrounding officers.

Court documents don’t name an attorney for Burd.
